Relics exposed in Lake Shasta


Customers at Antlers Resort & Marina near Lakeshore Drive in Lakehead Tuesday stand on the Highway 99 bridge, which is half-submerged in Lake Shasta. The marina was using the bridge as a makeshift low-water boat ramp as lake levels drop, exposing parts of the old highway for the first time in nearly 16 years.

Lake Shasta dropped this week to 150 feet below it’s high-water mark, putting the lake on track to drop below the 155 feet below crest it reached in 1992. The lowest the lake ever dropped was in 1977 when it plunged to 230 feet.

More than 50 feet of the head tower once used to move buckets of concrete in the construction of Shasta Dam rises above Lake Shasta’s surface due to low water levels. The head tower was partially dismantled after the dam was built and reappears when the lake drops 90 feet below the high-water line.

The old Highway 99 bridge over Salt Creek is one of the first pre-dam relics to emerge from Lake Shasta when the lake level drops. The bridge, still bearing a date stamp of 1925 when it was completed, can still be driven across Lower Salt Creek Drive.

A bridge crossing Doney Creek can be seen from of Forest Road off of Lakeshore Drive in Lakehead. The lowest the lake ever dipped was in 1977, when it dropped to 230 feet below the high-water mark.
