California's new same-sex marriage ban has taken hold in Shasta County."At this point ceremonies and licenses (for same-gender couples) are suspended until we have a definitive answer from the courts or the state," Shasta County Clerk Cathy Darling said Wednesday afternoon.

Voters may have sent message with McArthur votes

Keep a close eye on spending at Redding City Hall - but not necessarily at the expense of cherished parks, trails and other "goodies."
That seemed to be the message voters sent Tuesday when they elected challenger Missy McArthur to the council dais.
McArthur, a well-connected business woman and well-known community volunteer, was the top vote-getter in a crowded field of eight competing for two open City Council seats. She garnered 21.86 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results. Full story » Comments (20)

Missy McArthur and Dick Dickerson continue to lead in a tight Redding City Council race with 46 of 75 precincts reporting.Challenger McArthur remains the top vote-getter, with 21.7 percent. Incumbent Dick Dickerson is a close second, with 21.43 percent.

Propositions drew many Shasta County voters to polls

Gay marriage and parental notification before teen abortions proved to be the magnet issues that drew many Shasta County voters to the polls, several said Tuesday.
Jodi Lyford, 24, lost work and drove up from Chico to drop off her ballot at the Shasta County Elections Office in Redding, she said.
"Missed a day of work, paid for gas - totally worth it," Lyford said with conviction.

Some 98,223 Shasta County residents have registered to vote in today's election - an all-time record. Roughly 52,000 of those, or about 53 percent, have chosen to vote by mail.

Brianna Beaver simply wants to make a point."I think our views can be different (from our parents)," she said.Beaver, a junior at Shasta High School, lined up with hundreds of students in the school's library at lunch on Thursday and voted for Sen. Barack Obama in a mock election staged by the California Department of Education and the Secretary of State's office.
