Schreder features shows for October

Schreder Planetarium will feature two new shows this weekend.

"Wonders of the Universe" will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The program explores space as seen through the Hubble Telescope and looks back billions of years to the birth of the universe.

A special showing of "Larry Cat in Space" will precede "Wonders of the Universe" Saturday at 5:30 p.m. "Larry" is the story of a stargazing family seen through eyes of their cat.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger and available at the Shasta County Office of Education at 1644 Magnolia Ave. in Redding between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Parenting class set for teens

The Shasta Union High School District, along with Mercy Medical Center and Shasta County Public Health, is offering a series of classes on parenting.

The classes begin Wednesday and will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. weekly until Nov. 19.

The program, titled "Let's Talk Parenting," focuses on the job of parenting, developing positive parenting skills, the importance of parents taking care of themselves, stress and anger management, communication and child development.

The classes are free and registration is required.

Library adds PowerPoint class

The Redding Library has added PowerPoint to its free computer classes.

The class is for beginners and will focus on creating basic slide presentations. Students should be familiar with using a computer.

The classes are free and will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 and 15.

College opens new welding class

The welding technology program at Shasta College will again offer its general welding/shop metals class on weekends this fall.

The eight-week course will go from 9 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Oct. 18.

The class runs until Dec. 13.

Covered in the curriculum is safety, tools and machines, metals/materials, basic techniques, welding processes and layout design.

Enrollment is limited to 15 students and the class itself is repeatable. It will also be offered on Fridays this spring.
