Symphony welcomes fall — and commences its 103rd season — with a concert titled "A Star Shines in Autumn" Saturday at the Cascade Theater in Redding, and Sunday at Laxson Auditorium in Chico.

The program will feature pianist Jon Nakamatsu, the gold medalist of the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Nakamatsu has given solo performances with orchestras in the U.S. and abroad, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the

Boston Pops, Italy’s Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Berlin’s Deutsches Symphonie- Orchester and Japan’s Tokyo and Hiroshima Symphony Orchestras, according to Nakamatsu’s Web site.

"(Nakamatsu is) probably the highest profile soloist we’ve ever had at the NSS," said the symphony’s conductor and music director Kyle Pickett. "He is probably the greatest pianist of his generation."

Nakamatsu will perform Rachmaninoff’s third piano concerto. "(It) is probably the most difficult, spectacular and exciting

work in the repertoire," Pickett said. "There are very few people who can even play the piece, and Jon plays it the best I’ve ever heard."

Also on the program, Pickett will conduct Brahms’ Third Symphony and a "rousing salute to the season from autumn by Glazunov," according to a press release from the symphony.

A reception/fundraiser at the Market Street Steakhouse will follow Saturday’s concert.

Attendees can meet Nakamatsu, Pickett and other symphony members.
