First 5 offers new child care funding

First 5 Shasta has started offering funding specifically to licensed child care providers in the area.

Providers can apply for up to $2,000 from First 5 Shasta under its new "Special Opportunity Funding: Licensed Family Child Care Providers."

Applicants must operate in Shasta County, provide services to county children up to age 5 and hold a license from Community Care Licensing.

Two local students earn scholarships

Students from Bella Vista and Shasta Lake were awarded scholarships last week by the California Grocers Association.

Brandi Siem of Bella Vista was awarded $1,000 by the association's educational foundation. She is a freshman at the University of Oklahoma in Norman studying communication.

Joshua Dorney of Shasta Lake was awarded a $500 scholarship by the association. He is a freshman at Chico State University studying biology.

New book club to begin this month

COTTONWOOD - The Cottonwood Community Library is starting a book club.

The first gathering will be held at 4 p.m. Sept. 23 and then will be held monthly.

The club selected "The Diplomat's Wife" by Pam Jenoff for this month.

Organizers said reading the book isn't required.

Library schedules college prep class

The Redding Library will host a seminar for high schoolers who will be enrolling in college this year.

The class, set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 2 in the library's community room, will be led by Randall Morrissey, a local educator and parent.

The class is free and open to the public. For more information, call 245-7253.
