Shasta has to recover
In the long run, the 32-12 loss at Feather River on Saturday won't mean so much in the Shasta College football team's season.
The question is how this group of Knights (3-2) can bounce back after getting soundly beaten for the first time all season.
"They are just a better football team," Knights coach Craig Thompson said. "We aren't at their level talent-wise yet."
Feather River sent game statistics out Sunday and numbers revealed the ground dominance of the Golden Eagles (4-2). Feather River racked up 427 yards rushing and only put the ball up in the air seven times all game.
Three different Golden Eagles went over the 100-yard mark. Leading the way was quarterback Mike Crumbaker who ran 18 times for 155 yards and scored touchdown runs of 47 and 1 yard. Tavares Rhodes added 111 yards on 18 rushes and scored on a 13-yard TD run less than two minutes into the game. Rhodes also had a 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter that put the Golden Eagles up 30-12 at that point.
Neville Bryce also had 109 yards on 14 carries.
"Because of their athleticism and speed, we just couldn't keep up with them," Thompson said.
Shasta inside linebackers Ryan McDonald and Zach Gibbons both had 13 tackles, while free safety Scott Armstead had eight and outside linebacker Jake Kyle had seven. McDonald, Armstead and Kyle all had two tackles for losses.
Feather River led 16-0 at halftime before the Knights got on the board.
Feather River's defense neutralized Shasta running back Brandon Baldwin (13 carries, 14 yards) and quarterback Will Camy (14-of-32, 213 yards, 2 TDs).
Two bright spots for Shasta were wide receiver Ben Weaver and running back Ryan Krueger.
Weaver hauled in a 72-yard touchdown catch from Camy early in the third quarter. He also added a 13-yard TD catch early in the fourth quarter that brought Shasta to 23-12. The sophomore finished with seven catches for 153 yards.
After being held to 2.2 yards per carry this season, Krueger busted loose for 101 yards on 13 rushes. The sophomore from Reno had runs of 44 and 32 yards.
But that was it for Knights highlights.
The defeat still was in a non-conference game. Now, Shasta can turn its attention to the Bay Valley Conference where the Knights loom as one of the two favorites along with Yuba, who happens to be their next opponent at 7 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
The 49ers are 3-2 and are coming off a 17-14 home victory over Siskiyous. Yuba also lost to Feather River 41-28 earlier in the season.
"First half of the season is over," Thompson said. "We've got a ways to go. We need to come right back out and get ready for Yuba. They are probably the toughest opponent we're going to face in our conference."

If they get Arrowsmith back and stay healthy as a team they will be just fine. This is not your "usual" Shasta College team..there is way too much talent here to think they are not going to be competitive every week. Go Knights!

OH My Gosh those players at Feather River College were HUGH. It was bone chilling cold. It will be great this Saturday against Yuba with some great weather. One of our players I won't name any names said after the game that he had about 750# on him all night long. Needless to say yesterday was just alittle sore. Should be an exciting game Saturday hope all can make it and support them. Go Knights

Definitely not a very positive tone for this article. I think there is a lot to be positive about, Jeffrey.
The Knights play their pre-season schedule playing up a division. To come through that with a winning record is a solid achievement, especially when you consider that they are one "Hail Mary" away from being 4-1, and truly were in the same class as every team they played except one.
And, personally, I think if we had a healthy team and a better start to the game to spread that tough defense out, and that would have been a competitive game, too. FRC is just too tough a team to play catch-up against.
On to conference play - Go Knights!

With all the talent this team has this year, it really would help if we had a head offensive coach who really knew what he was doing!! He seems only comfortable with a few plays and is not using the incredible talent he has on this team! The Knights are a great group of players who have come together to make this year a turning point for Shasta! They want to make the Knights a WINNING team. Give them a chance coach!!!
Posted by footballwizard99 on October 14, 2008 at 2:51 p.m.
Good point Danco. I think the big turn around this year is because of the huge coaching change they made on defense. They brought in a guy that was a head coach at the DII level and had some success. All they need to do now is get rid of the other pop-warner coaches and they'll be in good shape. Because this team does have the personnel to be highly competitive in the "north state" this season.Diskin, Thompson- step down to level of competition that doesn't require much "football knowledge" and that better suits you fellas. -Dirk

Hey maybe that great offensive "wizard" from Foothill will take over? He has a bunch of Foothill kids out there already and we know what he did with those guys!

Dirk,
Both Diskin and Thompson coach on the defensive side of the ball. Both individuals have a lot of knowledge about the game of football. I have witnessed this first hand.
Whatever personal vendettas or biases that you have against Shasta College football and the coaches at Shasta are obstructing your reasoning. Please stop making highly negative comments about our program. We are having a very successful season thus far, and we have been putting in a lot of hard work in order to continue our success. If you don't have anything positive to say, please, don't say anything at all.
Thanks,
Will Camy

I don't get it how FRC gets such a well rounded program in freezing cold, desolate, nowhere land. The lines were huge and strong(several listed over 300 pounds) and that's where the biggest difference was in this game. Maybe that short hop over to Nevada helps.

Will Camy~ You sound like a great kid and are very talented on the football field. However, my comments about the SC coaching staff is my personal opinion based off of my evaluations for the past years. I have seen a lot more losing seasons than winning seasons over the years with these 2 particular coaches.
I admire your courage to get on here and defend your staff and team. My only concern is for the continuing future of the program and the future for the players. I stated in my previous comment that this year's squad has the personnel to have a winning season, indeed. So in short- I applaud your efforts as a player and as a team and all the hard work you put in. But unfortunately this is the real world kid and people are going to state their opinions-some good-and some bad. That's life, and as an athlete you need to stay focused on whats important and not let this outside business interfere with your preparation for the upcoming game. My opinion on these 2 particular coaches remains the same (as i'm sure most would agree who have witnessed Knights football over the past 10 years or so). And when I feel like something isn't right a pair of coaches are still around when they should have been 'canned' along time ago, I'm going to state my opinion. As an athlete, stay out of the media bull s*it, because there is a lot more negativity and opinions as your playing days extend. -Dirk

I have heard that their team has a TON of kids from back East, like Florida, Georgia, etc...not sure how they are getting that either, but I would much rather go watch our local kids compete at Shsata then a bunch of kids we do not know. These guys are very competitive and who knows, maybe this will be the start of something good.
Dirk, I hear what you are saying about those coaches, and you make alot of good points. The problem is that there is zero chance of Thompson being fired. I guess all we can do is support these athletes as best as possible and see what happens.
Razor, are you ever going to learn how to spell, or are you going to continue to ride that short bus forever?
Posted by wyseguy on October 14, 2008 at 11:41 p.m.
Well, at least you made a lot of things clear in your post to Will.
That young man has more right to be on here speaking on this subject than you do. He is a player. He is one of the ones they (the media) write the articles about. (Oh, and YOU are not the media, by the way - you are a sad sack, sour apples, negative blogger.)
To Will, I do agree with footballgizzard about one thing, though - don't worry about us minor-market, backwoods sports article bloggers. If we had real lives we would be out living them, not sitting here trying to be relevant with a blog handle and a keyboard ("this is the real world kid" - give me a break).
You guys are having a great season. And there are a LOT of us who have gotten past our own failure demons, and are pulling for you every week. Now go get Yuba and get conference play off to a great start. We want to see you guys in a bowl game this year!
Footballlizard, you should take a lesson from this kid's message. Sure you can sit on here and spout negative predictions of doom and gloom (just so you can say you were right when bad things happen) - but, really, why would you? Lighten up.
Thankfully, at the JC level, there is a lot more to a coach than wins and losses. Coach Thompson and Diskin BOTH seem like they do a great job of making a team with whoever comes out each year.
When they have talent, they win, when they don't, they focus on other aspects of the game. If you had REALLY followed football, you would know that - nobody ever accuses them of losing when they could have won, just that they don't get talent from as many other places as some others - do the words "Community College" even mean anything to you?
And there ARE other aspects, especially at this level - like getting your school work done so you can graduate and finish your education, with football or without. They help open doors for the kids who can and want to go on in sports, but they also know nobody will go on to anywhere else if they don't graduate.
I have said it before footmouthwizard, if you want to live in a town where winning is everything, there is a quaint little village near USC (called L.A.) that would just love to have you.
As for me, I will continue going to the Shasta games, enjoying the VERY good team we have this year, and I hope both Coach Thompson and Coach Disking (who I will bet you have never even met) are both here to make this experience a great one for these young men, for many years to come.
Good luck, Will, and don't hate "the Wiz," he just takes a long time to go down a short path, sometimes.

Wyseguy~ I'm not going to get into great detail with you on here about what I think because- chances are- your opinion is going to remain the same. Will seems like a great kid. But this (the paper) is part of the media and Will doesn't need to be responding to comments on here. You don't see athletes at the higher level calling ESPN and complaining because they or their team got scrutinized by some analysts or fan polls. Dealing with scrutiny and fans opinions is all part of the game- just like any thing else. I have a right to my opinion pal and when I think that a ooaches time is overdone- I'm going to speak it. And as for last season- I believe they had a 70+ man roster (and supposibly 5+ boys with 4.3 speed) and their record was 1-9? They have had talent and not won. How many chances do you get as a head coach? Any other program-any other place- your gone after consecutive losing seasons like they have displayed. We will let this season speak for itself and any kind of losing record or .500 record will reflect on the coaches. I wish the knights players good luck and continued success like I have said a dozen times before on here. Cuz they do have the talent to make something happen this year. As for me~ I will be going to Shasta games as well and supporting the players. And for the coaches- I will lay low on my opinion- and see how the season plays out.

Look, you are probably not a bad guy, Wiz, just a negative one. You spent a dozen posts a couple weeks ago saying there is no talent in the North State, now you say the Knights had great talent last year and should have won. You can't have it both ways.
I will close with two points - first, you are definitely entitled to your opinion (even if you are wrong). I just wish you weren't so negative.
Second, I am THRILLED to know I am your your pal.
:)
Posted by footballwizard99 on October 15, 2008 at 9:25 p.m.
I'm not trying to have it both ways. Scroll up to my first comment on this page. I stated competitive in the "north state." I just failed to put "north state" in the previous comment again. My past posts were about the north state being competitive with other parts of the state. Just to clarify pal- I have been consistent with my opinion and posts. And as far as negativity goes- why does my opinion have to be considered negative? I don't like to see a guy have more losing seasons than winning seasons and still receive the benefit of keeping his job. It just doesn't seem right to me. I think that I have a valid point. Everybody I talk to about this specific topic seems to agree as well. Furthermore, that's why I said in my previous statement, let the season play out and see what their record is. With this squad and their new pancake schedule- what should their record be? I would say at least 6-4, maybe 7-3? And if not- they have already topped last season's record- so he continues to be the head coach? Something is twisted and things seem to be highly political out at SC's athletic department. But let's see how the season turns out and then we'll chat pal. Until than- let's just enjoy the rest of the season. Cuz the Shasta High Wolves are looking great!!!!!!!!
Posted by wyseguy on October 15, 2008 at 11:43 p.m.
What you are saying is just not true, Wiz. I am going to keep it very light in this post so you can see what NOT-negative looks like.
"If ever oh ever a wiz there was,
footballwizard is one because,
because, because, because, because....
of all the negative things he does."
When you say "everybody," that covers a lot of ground - because it includes me. And I don't agree with you at all. Coaches Thompson and Diskin do a GREAT job, both on the field, and off, and I support them completely. So, it is not true to say everybody you talk to agrees with you.
Let me clarify for you, pally my pal - when you say somebody should keep their job, that is positive. When you say someone shoul NOT keep their job, that is a negative statement - plain and simple - your words.
When you say the schedule the team has is a pancake schedule, that is an insult, and it is negative Plus you get the trifecta, because it is also untrue - Shasta has beaten some teams this year who have gone on to have solid seasons so far, even playing teams from - gulp - other areas. (Mendocino is 4-2 and Laney is 3-2, for starters).
You end every post you make on this forum by saying you are pulling for north state athletes. The problem is you start most of those posts by saying what is wrong with them, or their coaches, or their schedules, or... well you get the point. The point being you speak with forked tongue, football Kimmo Sabe.
To paraphrase the great philosopher Forrest G., "negative is as negative does." And you my son, is one negative Wizard. You even have a double negative in the handle you chose (nein-de-nein).
Since I'm in a quoting mood, one of my personal favorites, the eternally wise old pharmacist Mark Blankfield (remember "Fridays?") gives you good advice when he says, "take a pill!"
But you are right about Shasta - they look tough this year! I wonder if that will be enough in this topsy-turvy season in the EAL.
Posted by footballwizard99 on October 16, 2008 at 6 p.m.
You must be part of the SC "family" because that's all I heard all last season at the Shasta High games was something needs to be done about that Shasta College program and their coaches. Whenever the topic came up- there was NOTHING SAID BUT- "something has to change." Just because a select few people on here don't agree doesn't mean anything. The bloggers on here account for what % of Shasta County (probably less than 1%). The people that are always making comments on here are usually the same 4-5 people. 4-5 opinions isn't much. Bottom line is I have heard what I have heard for a very long time out in the public- and it has been a lot of negativity and the word "change" used countless times. But Razor and Wsyeguy- you have your opinions and I have mine. And you'll have your supporters and I'll have mine. End of story.

I see what your saying footballguy, even though I'm an EHS dad. I have heard a lot of comments about the Shasta program and the head coach's job possibly being in jeopardy. Frankly, I don't understand it either. The play calling is out of this world sometimes. I'm never going to forget when Shasta was playing Siskiyous a few years ago and the game was on the line and Coach T called a widereceiver pass or a halfback pass when they were in the red zone to end the game. But they are doing quite well right now and lets just enjoy it. If there isn't a dramatic improvement with this season compared to the previous ones, than I'm sure something will be done. How about the River Bowl huh? Your squad is tough but I think we will put up a fight this season. Especially cuz of the intense rivalry.

Wiz, I think if you want to know about Shasta College football, there are better places to get your information that from the crowd at high school games.
I think it is hilarious that you assume your opinion reflects the majority - presumptuous you are, football jedi.
As in most situations, the core truth is only known by a few. Everybody else makes their mind up on what they heard from another source. (Personally, I made my mind up because of something I heard while I was getting my hair cut - you know hairdressers, they know EVERYTHING!) My point is, the emotional opinion of your reliable polling group (high school gossipers )is not really germane to the issue.
Coach Thompson brings a lot to the table, as does Coach Diskin, as well as the rest of the staff. If you want to know more, go meet them. Ask them the questions you toss off here on the anonymous blog. Watch them run a practice. Watch them run the sidelines during a game. Will that change your opinion? I don't know, but then it will at least be based on something more meaningful than gossip you heard in line at the snack bar at Thompson Field.
Do I agree with every play called in every game? Heck, no. Could I do better? Absolutely! (As long as I can call plays from the anonymous safety of the stands, with all the time I want to take between plays, and ONLY if I know the play is going to work in advance).
But they are there - they put in their time and they seem to run a program where very few kids end up in the paper for anything but playing football. THAT is an accomplishment all by itself.
And, "End of story...?" Hilarious, where do you get this stuff? Am I being dismissed, here? LOL, There is only one "End of Story," Wiz. You can read about it in the Book of Revelations.
Posted by wyseguy on October 17, 2008 at 9:41 a.m.
Good post, wonder -
Look, I really think all the fans on the blog want our local athletes to succeed. Even the Wiz. He's just a little scared to jump in and take a chance on believing our kids won't let him down. I get that.
I am just a positive person by nature, and to me, you show your support by being positive about what good things can happen, whether they do or not.
I think it doesn't do anybody any good to couch everything in negative terms. That's just my personal style.
The only posts which really are classless are the ones where these young athletes are singled out by name and criticized, and I realize most of those are kids posting about other kids.
The rest of the posts just make great debate, so, it's all good.
I'm out of this post - peace.
