North State Briefs: Oct. 12, 2008

Volunteers sought for fire-rehab work

Volunteers are being recruited by the Bureau of Land Management to perform fire-rehabilitation work in the Chappie-Shasta Off Highway Vehicle Area north of Redding.

The work project begins at 8 a.m. Saturday with members of the Redding Dirt Riders, Shasta Rock Rollers and the Black Sheep 4x4 Club. Meet at the Shasta Dam parking area.

Volunteers need to bring sturdy work boots, and the BLM will provide tools and water, spokesman Jeff Fontana said.

The group will install trail signs and spread straw on fire-damaged slopes to reduce erosion.

Call the BLM's Redding Field Office at 224-2100 for more information.

Prescribed burn set for Macdoel area

Klamath National Forest officials plan to set fire to 700 acres in the Macdoel area as part of a prescribed burn project.

The Little Deer understory burn in the Goosenest Ranger District will begin when weather permits and conditions are appropriate, KNF spokesman Kit Jacoby said.

The land is three miles southwest of the intersection of Highway 97 and the 77 Road, also known as Tennant Road, along the 44N27 Road north of Little Deer Mountain.

The goal is to reduce hazardous fuels and enhance wildlife habitat.
