Air gives backpack a lift

Eastsport's Air Pack is one of its newer, more traditional backpacks. Designed to address the increasing spinal and back issues from heavily filled packs young students carry, this backpack has been met with rave user reviews.

One of this backpack's many features is a patented, built-in air pillow that adjusts to rest against the lower back for lumbar support.

The bag's overall design transfers the weight from shoulders to the lower back, effectively lightening the pack's weight, reducing the carrier's physical stress.

The Air Pack sports other nifty features. There's a sturdy padded handle on top, useful for hanging the bag. A special built-in compartment fits a 15-inch laptop, and a cavernous interior accommodates books and other necessities.

The pack boasts multiple pockets - for school supplies, a cell phone, a water bottle and an umbrella. There's even a slot for an identification card.

It's a great backpack, says the father of a young student. The cushioned shoulder straps adjust for an easy fit.

"It feels like nothing's on my back," said Conner DeFelice, an 11-year-old Northern California middle-schooler. "Even (with) 60 pounds on my back!"

It's like a bottomless pit, he said, with room for everything. And it stays in place.

Cleaning is simple. Hand wash with mild soap, or wipe down with a damp cloth, then air dry.

The Air Pack retails from $19 to $30 and is available at Wal-Mart and other smaller retail stores, and online at at ErgoWorks (www.ask ergoworks.com).

At www.walmart.com, it's listed as the Eastsport Skater Backpack.
