PV beats EHS, gets 1st EAL ‘W'

CHICO — Maybe it was the long bus ride down south. Maybe it was playing a football team desperate for a victory. Maybe it was from looking ahead to the next week's rivalry showdown.

Enterprise High School coach Darren Trueblood had a simple answer, though: "We got outplayed tonight."

Whatever the reason was, Enterprise needs to figure it out quickly because the Hornets not only have their annual River Bowl with crosstown rival Shasta up next, but the rest of their season will depend on how they respond after Friday's 35-7 shellacking at the hands of a game Pleasant Valley squad at Asgard Yard.

Plenty of problems surfaced in the Eastern Athletic League contest:

The Hornets couldn't hold on to the ball, committing four turnovers that led to 21 points for the Vikings.

The defense couldn't make key stops, allowing two fourth-down conversions and 4-of-5 third-down conversions in the second and third quarters which was when the game was decided.

Enterprise came out flat and couldn't match the prolonged intensity Pleasant Valley displayed from needing a win to avert an 0-3 hole in league.

Adding injury to the insult of the 35-7 rout was Enterprise quarterback Anthony Williams getting hurt early in the second half, ending his night with 7:14 left in the third quarter.

Trueblood said he didn't know the extent of Williams' injury, but he will be re-evaluated today.

Williams was under constant pressure when he dropped back to pass. The Vikings (1-2 EAL, 4-2) got to him twice and forced several off-target throws. He finished 3-of-9 for 38 yards with a touchdown pass and one interception.

Senior Ryan Enyeart caught the Hornets' lone touchdown, a 10-yard pass on third-and-goal from the Pleasant Valley 10 with 39 seconds left before halftime. With the extra point, the Hornets (2-1 EAL, 4-2) cut the Vikings' lead to 21-7.

Any momentum Enterprise had earned vanished on the second-half kickoff. A deep kick near the Pleasant Valley sideline was left to go out of bounds or the end zone, but the ball stopped rolling at the 2-yard line. The live ball was knocked out of bounds by a Viking before possession could be obtained.

That set up the Hornets in bad field position, and they ended up punting from their own 11-yard line.

Pleasant Valley took over at the Hornets 29-yard line, another short field for the Vikings to manage. Quarterback Patrick Randolph scored on a 1-yard keeper seven plays later to pad the Vikings' lead to 28-7. That was Randolph's second score on the ground. He also threw for two TDs as well.

Two plays later, another fumble set up the Vikings at the 30 of Enterprise. This time running back Brendon Nickas scored from a yard out as Pleasant Valley led 35-7 with 4:10 left in the third quarter.

No black jersey's this week...Yellow jersey's for practice's in the following week...i think they became to cockey and forgot some of the fundementals of the game..

Talk about cockey you should of been at the Foothill game. Had Paradise all throughout the game and lost it with (2) touchdowns in the last three minutes of the game. It was absolutely horrifying. You can't underestimate the Bobcats and that is exactly what we did. With that being said the Bobcats deserved their victory.

Bobcats didn't show up until the end of the game. I didn't think Foothill was cockey at all. I just think Bobcat's coach finally started calling better plays at the end. Eight penalties hurts a team that's for sure. There is no excuse for delay of game penalties at all. I didn't quite understand the helmet to helmet calls, but I guess I didn't see the plays well enough.
All I know is the Bobcats better be more prepared next week against Red Bluff and the dull crowd needs to liven up or the team will be in trouble.

Pleasant Valley finally learned how to finish a game. After those last two losses we were still nervous until the 4th quarter when the second string came in and still controlled the field. Hope the EHS QB is OK. He was getting hit on almost every play. Almond Bowl should be interesting with Chico coming off that thumping by RB (it was about time for RB to get a win). And PV coming off a big win. Hopefully EHS will take to Shasta next week somebody needs to beat them and Paradise.

OUCH! What the heck happened down there in Chico? Is PV that good?

The Hornets were getting beat so bad that the EHS coach started crying to the ref about the PV fans taunting his players. What a crybaby! The Hornets should have ran the ball more up the middle, it looked pretty effective before halftime. Shasta still looks like the powerhouse in the EAL!

Gotta pull the breaks on that Hornet train. Shasta Is the clear cut #1, they should handle the hornets.

in response to sawblade

Sawblade, were you one of the mouthy adults from PV near the EHS sideline?
The bottom line is PV came out looking like a team that HAD to win the game, and EHS came out and GAVE PV the ball 5 TIMES inside their own 40 yard line. You cannot do that against a good team. Give PV credit, they played well, but they are not better then either team EHS has already beaten, and West Valley would kick their tail as well. If you commit 4 turnovers inside your own 40, you are going to lose in the EAL EVERY time...oh well, onto the River Bowl. I do agree though, Shasta sure does look like the best team out there.
