•A ticket on the Titanic

A vote for Barack Obama is the same as buying a ticket for the maiden voyage of the steamship Titanic — a disaster!

Obama's philosophy to increase taxes and increase government spending is sure to bring on a "Hoover type" depression.

I feel sorry for those who vote for an inexperienced individual for the office of president of the United States, whose judgment and pedigree are questionable, who will lose their jobs because of their own vote.

Stan Wiencek

•Immigrants vote with feet

Barack Obama claims America is not respected in the world. In his Berlin speech, he claims America is not like it used to be. But illegal immigrants still storm across our borders. They overcrowd our emergency medical rooms and don't pay for those services. They drive on our roads without the use of a driver's license, and they don't pay income taxes. The illegal women get free childbirth assistance and services. As far as I know, Mexico offers no such birthing services for our women. These women can buy property even though it is illegal.

Obama claims we are unfair to minorities. These minorities can receive an education, and they can buy houses, and attend college and even engage in our political system.

If we are so disrespected, why do they come here? Why give money to Africa? We sent over a billion dollars in aid to Indonesia when they had their earthquake. If we are so evil, why do illegal immigrants come here?

God Bless America!

Robert Lee

•Vote for freedom first

Things that have been said and done by Barack Obama in the past that makes me think he is very un-American and could hurt our way of life in our United States. On Dec. 15, 1791, the Bill of Rights became a part of the Constitution, developed from ideas set forth in the Bible and in ancient Greek and Roman civilization. The first 10 amendments guaranteed basic freedoms and rights to the people. The candidates we elect Nov. 4 will have more of an effect on our individual rights. Let's tell our government officials we will not let them take any more freedoms from us. We will be voting freedom first.

If I remember right, the Bill of Rights was put into the Constitution to limit the federal government's infringement of our constitutional rights. When the president, vice president, and members of Congress are sworn in, do they not take an oath to "preserve and protect" the Constitution?

Before we vote for a state or federal politician, look into their background and see how they voted and what they voted on in the past. We have some candidates running that truly worry me and are a threat to our freedoms. For one, Barack Obama speaks with a silver tongue but the more he says the more forked it becomes.

These three letter writers need to talk to Sen John McCain. He knows the truth about Sen Obama and stated clearly to the people at his rally yesterday. "Sen Obama is a good American citizen, a good family man, and no one needs to fear Sen Obama becoming President of the United States" those are direct statements from Sen John McCain who re-found his integrity yesterday.

Perhaps these letter writers should review their prejudice, and make a similar course correction.

Posted by randy on October 11, 2008 at 6:34 a.m.

Wasted wind. Would I be right to assume all the above letter writers helped to put Bush in office? You all own the historic mess we are now in and all any of you can offer in the way of guidence back out of this darkness is innuendo and character attacks on Obama. You are all equally lame and desperate as McCain. Apparently, according to polls, the American people have witnessed for themselves what each of these candidates are made of and are giving increasing support to Obama. Hopefully this election will end the most disasterous 8 years in our history and Obama will lead our nation into a new era where we create peace with our fellow humans, and a sustainable existance on our Mother Earth.

Posted by troutmask on October 11, 2008 at 6:44 a.m.

The bigger question is -- what Constitutional rights have been stripped of us the past 8 years by those in power? None you say? Then why would I trust you to tell me what basic Contitutional rights Obama will strip from us. As I see it, there are only rights to be restored and the Obama/Biden tickeet is a refreshing step in that direction.

As the great American writer Mark Twain once quipped, "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it."

Please do not call me un-American, for that's what I am and therefore, I feel it is my duty to actively engage in debate about the upcoming election. I have been blessed with the freedom to say the things I believe that may differ from others. And right now, our current government does not deserve support. When they go home in January, they still can afford to pay their mortgage, drive to the store to buy groceries, and warm their little tootsies before their gas fireplaces. 'nuff said.

Posted by onandonanon on October 11, 2008 at 6:48 a.m.

No kidding Randy; such a public display of hollow, shallow thinking should shame those writers by its obvious mean spirit. Seems to me the last 8 years have been a true Titanic disaster, and it gives me no satisfaction to see the ship of state crashing on the rocks at present. Franklin Roosevelt gave the people hope in very hard times; Bush is about as inspiring as an empty wallet. One would be blind and willfully ignorant to wish an extension of the rotten leadership and corporate welfare that has brought us to this sorry situation.

That's the other thing. Remember Bush/Cheney's secret energy meetings, when Cheney sat down with Ken Lay of Enron and other corporate hotshots, to let these Captains of Industry set their own guidelines, write their own hall passes..Why in the world hasn't a vigilant media exposed the secrecy and evil intent of these pirates? The compliant, fatcat mainstream media is about as valid a guardian of the public interest as the whole Bushco crime family. I'm talking about CNN, ABC, CBS, hell, even NPR is afraid to speak truth to power. Poseurs all.

Perhaps he can also highlight Reddings other good ships, Turtle Bay, Big League Dreams, etc. as models of how Reddings forward thinkers bankrupt a community. But on the bright side, Little Ken and ArogantDick claim The Good Ship Stillwater will bring numerous high paying jobs, $9.00$$10.00 an hour jobs. GOLLEE,look at Redding, would ya!

Appears that all three writers have a beef with the Obama ticket. Before you start claiming one plan is better than another, start looking at what it is gong to cost you personally. Party affiliation aside, look at how much you are willing to give up before you wholeheartedly accept another's rule.

Robert Lee claims - "But illegal immigrants still storm across our borders."

- Not so fast, dude... According to a Pew Center study, Illegal immigration has slowed to a trickle of late.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/10/02/pew.immigration/

"Barack Obama claims America is not respected in the world."

- Another wildly inflated statement. Obama has only claimed that our reputation has been tarnished by George Bush and is not what it once was. There is a big difference between saying "America sucks" and "We can do better than this".

"Obama claims we are unfair to minorities."

- He does? Care to substantiate that with a quote? I doubt it. Just more fallacious BS.

"If we are so evil"

- Now Obama says we're evil? NOT! Another in a string of misrepresentations. If you will lower yourself to such dishonesty, why should we believe anything else you say?

You dug yourself a big fat hole dude... and now you don't have a way out of it.

I can hear the collective whine of the Republican base as this election slips away from them.

I see it in the anger and hostility being displayed at McCain/Palin rallies.

I see it in the headlines heralding the release of the "Troopergate" report.

I see it in the McCain campaign offices, with few volunteers who sit around all day bemoaning Obama's coming presidency.

It's not over yet... not by a long shot. There will be some more erratic spasms from the McCain campaign as they try to keep their heads above the water... now is the time to remain resolute and keep working as hard as ever.

Mr. Wiencek:
How is Obama's "pedigree questionable"? What are you insinuating? Pedigree is defined as a person's ancestry, lineage, or family tree. Obama's father was a black man from Kenya and his mother was a white woman from Kansas.

For those of you who may be as confused (to be charitable in my choice of adjectives) as the woman McCain admonished yesterday for calling Obama an Arab, Kenya is in Africa and is not an Arab country. I suspect that McCain rejected this woman's comments not only because Obama is not an Arab but because he knows that we'll be in even bigger trouble if the Arab world perceives us as anti-Arab.

These are scary times. We need to be careful that we are not diverted by Hitleresque attempts to divert our attention by making Obama the equivalent of a German Jew in the 1930s.

Posted by paul52 on October 11, 2008 at 8:14 a.m.

I'm most likely voting McCain, (pro-life) but if I was at a backyard bar-b-que and someone said "whose judgment and pedigree are questionable" I would wince, and try to get away from the dude. Pedigree?? That's pretty lame thinking... My dogs pedigree is questionable and I don't hold it against him. He's a great dog. I will not vote Obama, it's just sad the paper puts out this letter to stir reaction only, not to provoke thought or add insight.

As most of the prophets here proclaim, Obama will win the election. And as one opposed to his values and ideals because I really don't know who he is, what he is really going to change, and why his records of school are not available, I'm simply waiting for him to crash and burn because he is ultimately just another politician (look at those who surround him). Our country's problems go beyond whoever our next President is and when the problems continue, I wonder what all the liberals are then going to say? "Just curious...what do you think should have been done to a police officer who admits to using a taser gun on a 10 year old boy?"

- That was not the reasoning used by Palin and her husband while pushing for the man to be fired.

The question was not "Was the trooper a mean guy... or a bad guy?"...

The question was "Did Palin abuse her authority as Governor of Alaska?"

The answer came from a panel of mostly Republican lawmakers, chosen long before Palin was asked to join McCain's campaign, and was a unanimous "YES"!!!

Just maybe you should find out about the use of it first. Investigation of said abuse found it to not be the case. The son in question in deed asked for it to be used on him. Before the use, the setting was changed to the lowest setting possible. I admit, a stupid thing to do,but if one is curious about outcomes they may want to rethink what they ask for. Robert Lee,

There were about 1 million illegal aliens working here before Reagan. When he left office there were 3 million and today about 12 million or so.

Union membership during this same period dropped 25% to 7%. Cheap labor increases corporate profits. Before Reagan they enforced laws against hiring illegals which served as a barrier to their entry.

So the remedy for illegal immigrants? Bring back the unions!

Posted by canaan on October 11, 2008 at 9:27 a.m.

Any police officer that uses a taser on a child simply to show the child the effects should be fired. Case closed. I suppose it is to hard for some people to ever agree in print with anything someone in the other political party did or said...
Nitesweep 67 you said, "The son in question in deed asked for it to be used on him." If the officer did not have the sense and judgement to say "no" he should be fired. When 10 year old girls say yes to to sex with a 40 year old men, the 40 year old man is at fault. Case closed. Please do not make excuses for the 40 year old man.

If Palin did not try to get this loser fired, you most likely would be attacking her for..."Using her power to protect her family, even when a police officer uses a taser on a 10 year old child!! Some family values!"

She had the legal authority to fire the Commisoner. Some reasonable folks would argue that any sytem that keeps this rogue officer on the force is broken and should be fixed. People may need to be fired to fix a system that allows this this police office to carry a badge.

Does any one of you want a man of this judgement patroling the streets of Redding?

If Palin/McCain says yes, some of you will say no, regardless of the question. How about an Obama supporter agreeing that this officer should have been fired?

"Obama's philosophy to increase taxes and increase government spending is sure to bring on a "Hoover type" depression."

FDR put the country back to work by raising taxes on incomes above $3 to $4 million a year in today’s dollars to 91 percent and corporate taxes to over 50% of profits.

That revenue built our infrastructure from roads and bridges, dams, water systems and sewers, schools, hospitals and transportation systems like railway and airports.

It helped educate a generation of people returning from WWII. It reigned in the greedy who took money out of the economy.

The wealthy always hated FDRs New Deal and fought back and were finally rewarded when Reagan won office and promptly began to dismantle the FDRs New Deal and cut income taxes on the very rich from 70% down to 27%. Corporate tax rates were also cut so severely that they went from representing over 33% of total federal tax receipts in 1951 to less than 9% in 1983.

The result has been devastating for our country. The first symptom of a dying superpower is a crumbling infrastructure.

The laissez-faire capitalism of Herbert Hoover and Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush and John McCain is finally gasping for its last breath. Hopefully we can recover from their failed ideology.

A) Palin did not push for the trooper to be fired for tasering a ten year old.

B) The man is no longer an Alaska State Trooper.

C) Sarah Palin did use her influence to fire Walt Monegan for personal reasons.

D) Sarah Palin was found to have ABUSED HER AUTHORITY AS GOVERNOR OF ALASKA by a bipartisan, mostly Republican, panel of lawmakers.

E) The investigation was led by a former district attorney who is universally well respected by both parties.

F) The investigation was started long before Sarah Palin was chosen as McCain's running mate. Palin was cooperating with the investigation, in full, until she joined the McCain ticket.

G) Walt Monegan now has the ammunition necessary to file a federal civil-rights lawsuit against Sarah Palin and the State of Alaska.

Three letters to the editor and other articles on the same day that only enforce the sadly uninformed - no, that is too kind - sadly desperate and actually retarded grasping at any attack to gain any sort of hope.

Palin uses her power to fire a guy going thru a divorce with her family member. Sounds like the "good old boy" (can you say "Ex-Sheriff Jim Pope"?)network is alive and well in the icy North. I can only imagine the type of treatment people would receive if she were elected to a higher office - make fun of her on your radio show? 30 days in jail. Disagree with drilling? Into the torture chamber. Allow women to control thier own bodies? Of with their heads!

Stan - you actually claim there is going to be a recession? Are you living in a cave. Your prez has lead us much, much, deeper than the Titanic rests. He makes Hoover look like an award winning economist. It would be easy for anyone to improve on his ability to influence the economy.

Robert - If you live in a 40 ft hole full of steaming dung, would you not move into the adjacent hole full of steaming dung that is only 20 ft deep? Your argument is also steaming pretty hard. America leads in gun crime, is a dismal 22nd in the world in education, leads in jail population (even over Russia!), and as to our economy...

Wes - Dear, sweet, befuddled Wes. You are going to lecture a black man on the Bill of Rights? Really? Ummmm... Wes?

Wow, it really is amazing that people can be so blind. Just the war and the economy should be enough for any person to make sure that the same Cheney led regime does not ever come close to power again. Of course, you have to actually have to think intelligently to figure that out.

"I can see Russia from my house!"

"So.....I guess there are no Obama supporters who think the officer should have been fired. I'll ask a different question."

You are not getting an answer because the headline is not "Officer tasers ten-year-old boy".

The headline is "Sarah Palin abused authority as Governor of Alaska"

Trying to change the subject to vilify a person whose actions are not relevant to Sarah Palin's abuse is just another way to shift attention away from a failure of McCain's ability to choose a qualified VP for his ticket.

If McCain doesn't have good enough judgment to pick a viable running-mate... why should we trust his ability to choose the right people for a presidential cabinet... or to nominate judges?

Our Redding McCain supporters are more intelligent than the ones showing up at McCain and Palin rallies. There will be no displays of ignorance, fear and racism. If Sarah Palin were to pay Redding a visit, the local conservative rubes would limit their shouting to..."show your tits, lets see your tits".

Right on, and that is one response that Palin could probably get right.
But, as with her political resume, we might discover her physique is also enhanced and padded.

yeah...maybe a little....my fault....Say what you will about Palin, she has har political faults, but I think she acted appropriatley enough not to be vilified in this matter. If you say someone is 100% wrong all the time, or someone is right 100% of the time, it lacks objectivity. So many folks are so objective in discussing movies, sports, music, travel etc., but when it comes to politics these same people get freaky. It becomes dull and unintersting

Yup bottom line in this case is that tasering a child is acceptable - particulary by those defending the trooper, says alot doesn't it!

It's cool, Paul.

I agree with you about the 100% part...

I don't think McCain is wrong 100% of the time. I don't think Obama is right 100% of the time.

But, I will admit to pointing out the problems I see with McCain and only rarely giving him credit for the things that I like. (NOTE: I gave him a thumbs up yesterday for his positive words about Obama at a rally)

I also won't post my problems (which are very few) with Obama.

Why?

Because I support Obama and will not work towards undermining his campaign.

Of course, if he were to do something really horrible, I would say so... but I simply have not seen anything like that.

So, while I readily admit I am partisan, I will not lie for my candidate under any circumstances.

Honesty is always the best policy.

Still curious, what would you want done to a Redding Police Officer who tasered your 10 year old nephew?

We as citizens have a right not to have our telephone conversations listened to by the NSA. It is illegal for the government to collect (listen into and record) any phone conversation involving an American citizen at home or abroad without one of the following.

1: Probable cause that the person being collected upon is commiting or planning a criminal act. In thios case, the FISA court must review the case within 3 days after the fact to approve.

2: Direct approval from DirNSA (Director of the NSA).

3: Signed approval from the FISA courts for a temporary order until DirNSA can approve.

4: Federal government employee using a government phone. In this case, the collectors are to immediately stop listening and recording when they deem the call to be ordinary.

We have been collecting on our own troops calling home to speak to their families. I know this to be true. We've been doing it for years.

Feel free to just dismiss my claims Mr. Steele, but I know what goes on with these collections. I was a part of it for 5 years. This current government has stomped on the flag and the constitution. They have lied to all of us in the name of oil.

On a side note Mr. Steele, if you want to look at rights being abused, I recommend you do the research on a 3 year-old Iraqi boy named Ali Hussein.

I am technically an Obama supporter since I sold my vote for a dollar to a friend of mine. ( I wanted to vote for Ron Paul).

To answer your question: He should have been tasered 8 times, one for each year of the child beneath 18 years of age.

Secondly, he should have lost all parental rights of the child henceforth.

Thirdly. A solid thrashing from anyone who knew him who happens to be a parent.

Stan Wiencek's letter makes me wonder if there are republicans being paid to write propaganda. Maybe these misguided souls just watch fox news and listen to Rush Limbaugh all day long, but the fact remains that their party says one thing and does another every time!

You can't vote for a party on principles that they claim to have if they make bigger government with greater debt, and are perfectly willing to choose an unethical governor as a running mate for John McCain.

You can't believe that they safeguard the constitution if they re-interpret the fourth amendment in 1990 to allow illegal search and seizure (roadside checkpoints), and complete invasion into people's private lives outside of work (drug testing).

War mongering and constantly rattling sabers throughout the world. Protecting the interests of oil, drug companies, tobacco, the military industrial complex, and financial institutes instead of the American people. That is the republican party! That is who the American people will say good bye to in the next election!

The tooth count on today's opinion page seems a bit low. C'mon progressives! The reason the RS did not print anything intelligent on todays "Letters" page is that nobody intelligent submitted anything. Most of these folks that were printed today just got done listening to KQMS or Fox News and started repeating the daily red meat for imbeciles.

The post about "show us your t*ts" is great! I see a t-shirt coming over that one.

This election is over. Obama has won. If you don't believe it look at McCain's body language when he tried to calm the crowd in Minnesota yesterday and then had to take the microphone away from the nut case that thought Obama was an Arab. It is over. And anyone of you stubborn republican, living in fear, know it alls who think Obama's past is somehow questionable go to this site and watch Mr. & Mrs. Moron Palin talk to and fraternize with secessionists. For those who don't know what the word means - it means people who have no respect for the constitution of the United States, no respect for the people who have died defending the constitution of the United States, no respect for those of us comprising the United States.

There are approximately 13million illegal immigrants in the US. Based on actual studies, most work at low skilled jobs and compete with blacks and hispanics who are high school dropouts. For the amount of social services they cost the US, it's a wash for the amount of consumer spending they contribute to the economy. The majority of Americans do not compete with the same jobs (agricultural, construction, mfg) jobs which they have. An illegal immigrant is 5 times less willing to commit a crime due their status with the INS. Most are employed as migrant farm workers or in large urban cities - LA, NY and Chicago. It's estimated if all the illegal immigrants were deported, the recession could slightly deepen since less money circulated in the country. Why do they risk their lives and come to country which isn't their native language ? Because their standard of living is so poor, the may be able to support their families if they risk everything to come here. How about focusing upon the number of citizens on welfare ? It costs billions for the taxpayers - most are native born Americans who for various reasons are subsidized by your tax dollars.

For a time the main "reasoning" in the Bush White House was that if Clinton was for it, then they were going to be against it. Kind of an ignorant litmus test. And a real indicator of the kind of petty, vengeful people they are. I mention this as part of a prediction, a warning - watch the neocons when they lose the upcoming election. You'll never see such a bunch of sore losers. Whining and pouting, they'll be a real contrast to the civilizid behavior of the Democrats who may well have had a couple elections stolen.

My post was not about nut case followers. If you believe the earth is less than 7,000 years old, that secession from the USA is ok, that a young girl should be made to bring a pregnancy to term even though her dad or brother is the father or some hoodlum is and you are the candidate for the Vice Presidency of the United States AND you think you are qualified to be then you are the nut case. Exhibit one - Sarah Palin. Bonafide nut case. Taking it one step further then if she is a nut case then the guy who made the sloppy pick for her as VP is also a nut case or worse a person willing to risk the fate of the country to a nut case for political gain. Then, the fact that McCain frequents casinos for gambling adventures is well documented.
