Area roundup: Foothill tennis pulls stunner against Vikings
Foothill High School girls tennis stunned Pleasant Valley 5-4 two days after getting swept by Shasta in their first-ever match in Palo Cedro.
Pleasant Valley's Melody Wu topped Foothill No. 1 Addie Morrow 6-0, 6-1. But, the Cougars fired back with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 Bethany Duval win. Teammates Savannah Swanson beat Rachel Kushner 6-4, 6-1, Amy Schell beat Katelyn Blackburn 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 and Rylee Theodore defeated Jessica Conchola 7-5, 6-3.
Swanson and Theodore teamed for the win at No. 3 doubles. Foothill (7-5 EAL) plays Enterprise on Tuesday.
West Valley 8, Anderson 1
The Eagles flew past the Cubs as Cassie DeBonis beat Yui Gabriele 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. West Valley's Jenni Mueller beat Mallory Risling 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, while Casey Dykier beat Anderson's Melissa Chipley love-love at No. 3 singles. Bianca Schafer, Miranda Jones and Taylor Needham each won their singles matches for the Eagles.
The Cubs got on the board when Tiffany Bernal and Katie Brock beat Amanda Richards and Allison Tucker 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
The Eagles (8-2 Northern Athletic League, 9-4) clinched a playoff spot with the win.
Shasta 6, Oroville 3
The Wolves won as Laura Beltran beat Stephanie Smith at No. 1 singles 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Lexi Thomas also bested Mary Ann Thornton 6-3, 6-1. Wolves temmate Brianna Iranpur beat Kelly Zimerlee 6-1, 6-3 and Beltran-Thomas, in a preview of what could be a section championship-winning doubles team, beat Smith-Thornton 10-2.
Prep volleyball
West Valley 3, Lassen 0
Morgan McCarley did a bit of everything to help the Eagles win 25-11, 25-17, 25-20. McCarley had 14 service points, three aces and five kills. Teammate Megan Bowen added 11 kills, 15 digs and West Valley's Cassidy Olson totalled 19 digs.
CV 3, Anderson 0
Ashley Sanchez pitched 12 assists for the Falcons who won 25-15, 25-23, 25-11. Central Valley (2-1 Northern Athletic Leagye) hitter Bre MacKie had eight kills, three blocks and teammate Brittany Moore had 13 digs.
Foothill 3, Pleasant Valley 0
Carly Penson had 20 service points, including six aces, and 14 digs as the Cougars swept the Vikings 25-17, 25-14, 25-21.
Kacie McCarthy had 11 kills and Lacey Coleman added seven kills for Foothill (5-1 EAL, 18-8), which remain tied atop the league with Red Bluff. Megan Goddard added 18 assists.
Shasta 3, Oroville 1
The Wolves won on the road 25-11, 24-26, 25-19, 25-17.
Alli Ball led the way with 16 kills, while Julie Annis had seven kills. Kiely Nelson had 24 service points, including three aces for Shasta (4-2 EAL, 17-12).
Enterprise 3, Chico1
The Hornets rebounded from Tuesday's five-game loss to Red Bluff with a 15-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-13 road win over the Panthers.
Amber Hall had 29 kills, while Jennifer Jardine added 25 digs for the Hornets (3-3 EAL, 11-14), who host Foothill on Tuesday.
Fall River 3, Modoc 0
The Bulldogs beat the Braves 25-23, 25-19, 25-15 to improve to 5-0 in Shasta Cascade League play.
Kristi Cearley had 13 kills and three blocks, Juliana Corr had eight kills and three aces and Lauren Vestal added six kills and eight assists for Fall River (21-6-3).
Hayfork 3, Paradise Adventist 0
The Timberjacks handled the Cougars 25-13, 25-14, 25-19.
Sydney Russell had 24 assist, Chelsea Reynolds added eight kills and six digs. Melia Mercill had eight kills and Melisa Pena had six aces for Hayfork (4-0 North Valley League, 14-2-2), which hosts Maxwell on Tuesday.
