Area roundup: WV battle: Johnson 1, Storms 2

West Valley High School cross country runner Michelle Johnson edged teammate Corissa Storms by six seconds to win the four-team meet at Central Valley on Wednesday.

Johnson crossed the line of the 3-mile course in 19 minutes, 41 seconds with Storms finishing in 19:47.

The one-two finish helped propel the Eagles to a win with 25 points, while CV was second with 46 points.

Corning was third with 65 points.

For Central Valley, Brooke Feranna was third in 20:55, while Samantha Vierra was eighth in 24:53

On the boys' side, Corning dominated, finishing with 32 points to second-place CV's 62.

Corning's Freddy Carillo ran away with first in 16:08, while fellow Cardinals' runner Jose Torres was second in 17:23.

West Valley's Forrest McBride was third in 17:41. For the Falcons, Ronnie Lancaster was sixth in 18:30, while Eric Carillo was seventh in 18:34.

Boys

Chico 27, Foothill 29

Foothill 23, Paradise 37

Girls

Chico beat Foothill and Shasta, while Foothill beat Paradise, and Paradise beat Shasta in the mixed dual race.

The Panthers' swept the top spots with Analy Nava winning in 19:57, Kody Atkins coming in second in 20:25, and Leah Arrequin earning bronze in 20:35.

For the Cougars, Julia Walker was fourth in 20:56 and Emily Stein was fifth in 21:11. For Shasta, Shannon Woodfill was sixth in 21:15.

Enterprise boys 24, Pleasant Valley 33

Enterprise boys 15, Oroville incomplete

Hornets Domenic D'Acquisto and Zach Kaylor tied again covering the 3.1-mile course in 15:35 for their second tie in as many weeks. Teammate Trevor Hope finished in 16:45 for fourth and Enterprise's Austin Lamkin ran 16:49 to lock up fifth place for the Hornets (4-0 EAL).

Enterprise girls 28, Pleasant Valley 39

Enterprise girls 15, Oroville incomplete

Enterprise's Jerri Spence won in 19:18. Teammate Breanna Winstead took fifth in 20:16 and Enterprise's Delanne Bartlett took sixth in 20:43. The Hornets (3-1 EAL) host Red Bluff at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Prep boys soccer

Enterprise 2, Red Bluff 2

The Hornets held on to tie the Spartans as Enterprise's Zane Roesner scored his 20th goal of the season.

Nathan Riveros opened the scoring for the Hornets in ninth minute off an assist from Brian Tofflemire. Roesner scored seven minutes later off an assist from Mitch Boyle. Jose Gutierrez had five saves in goal for Enterprise. (2-4-1 Eastern Athletic league, 7-10-2), which host Chico next.

Shasta 3, Foothill 0

After a rash of offensive struggles the past three games, the Wolves broke three to grab a 2-0 lead by half on goals by Brett LaHorge and Tyler Hight.

Haight added a score after the break for Shasta (4-2-1 EAL) which visits Red Bluff at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Cougars split with the Panthers and Bobcats as Chico's Daniel Parker won the 3.1-mile race in 16:34. Paradise's Grant Reed was second in 16:39 and the Panthers' Tom Dowdin was third in 16:48. Foothill's Ryan Teesdale was fourth in 17:21 and the Cougars' Garrett Cloney was seventh in 17:55.

Chico 19, Shasta 38

Paradise 26, Shasta 31

The Wolves were swept by the Panthers and Bobcats, but Shasta Kyle Clagg finished fifth in 17:33. Shasta's Harrison Saito was 15th in 18:56.

Anderson boys meet

Redding Christian won the five-team meet with 76 points. U-Prep was second with 47, Yreka was third with 46, Anderson was fourth with 32 and Mercy was fifth with 17.

Individually, Redding Christian's Bryce Wofford was the 100-meter freestyle in 1:10.72 and 100 backstroke in 1:30.88. The Lions' Paul Quaife won the 100 breaststroke in 1:27.25. RC's 200 medley relay team won in 2:18.75. U-Prep was second in 2:27.60.

Anderson girls meet

The Panthers' 103 point was enough for the win over Anderson's 92, Yreka's 65, Redding Christian's 28 and Mercy's 3.

For Redding Christian, Kira Leckey was third in the 500 free in 6:42.62 and Lindsey Hokema was second in the 100 breast in 1:30.22.

Shasta boys 99, Red Bluff 70

The Wolves pulled away from the Spartans near the end.

Shasta's Aaron Davis won the 200 free (2:01.74) and the 500 free (5:25), while Tyler Casey took the 200 IM (2:13.90) and the 100 breast (1:08). Tyler Degnan also won two events, the 50 free (24.25) and the 100 back (1:03.09).

Shasta girls 137, Red Bluff 18

The Wolves easily won as Kelly Edwards won the 200 IM (3:06.95) and Korina Steinbergs took the 50 free (28.01).

Also winning events for Shasta were Krista Judge in the 100 fly (1:19.92), Emily thompson in the 100 free (1:03.97) and Angie Helander in the 100 breast (1:23.11).

Foothill boys 111, Enterprise 54

Scott Tyler awon two events for the Cougars, the 200 free (1:58.37) and the 100 free (54.17).

The Hornets' Sam Rounds won the 200 IM (2:17.13) and the 100 back (1:01.83) while Jaxon Williams won the 500 free (5:33.68).

Foothill girls 96, Enterprise 71

Taylor Pincin won the 200 free (2:11.33) and the 200 IM (2:27.04) to lead the Cougars past the Hornets.

Foothill's Megan Akers won the 50 free (27.34) and the 100 free (59.56).

The Hornets' Lizzy Nava won the 100 back (1:10.71) while Mimi Natina won the 500 free (5:59.01).

JC volleyball

Shasta 3, West Valley 0

The Knights took care of business in three, winning 25-21, 25-18, 25-23.

For Shasta, Sarah Scott had 11 kills, while Lauren Swetland had six kills and nine blocks.

Kristen Marold added eight blocks for Shasta, while Ashley Webster had 19 assists for the Knights (11-9).

JC wrestling

Sierra 31, Shasta 10

Matt Thomas defeated Matt Kent 8-0 at 157 pounds, but the Knights lost on the road.

J.T. Minto got a injury-default victory.

Hitting clinic offered

Inside Sports on Hartnell Avenue has three weeks remaining in a four-week instructional hitting clinic.

The clinics run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays.

Cost is $25 for the four sessions.

YMCA rowing second in Ashland

The Shasta Family YMCA Rowing Club took second Sept. 28 at the Much Ado About Rowing 5K Head Race in Ashland, Ore.

The Master Men's 4 team and the Master Mixed 4 team each took second.

The YMCA Rowing Club competes at the Head of the American Regatta in Sacramento on Oct. 25.

Prep volleyball

Burney 3, Trinity 0

The Raiders downed the Wolves 25-16, 25-23, 25-23.

Hannah Rogers had five aces and 24 assists for Burney, while Megan Calzia and Jenna Watson each added six kills.

Courtney Jones had 13 kills for Burney (4-1 Shasta Cascade League, 24-1).

Mercy 3, Tulelake 1

The Warriors beat the Honkers 25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18.

Christina Ordorica lead Mercy with five kills, and Allison Wong added 15 service points with nine aces. Wong also had eight assists. Daniella Gutierrez lead the Warriors (11-12) with 14 digs.
