Kids encouraged to turn in candy

The Shasta County Office of Education will again hold "Treats for Trade" at Halloween this year for area students.

Students collect the candy they receive over Halloween and their school donates it to the county office of education, which then sends the candy to U.S. troops in Iraq. The class that collects the most pounds of candy will win a healthy class party put on by Shasta County Office of Education Nutrition Services.

Nutrition services last year collected over 600 pounds of candy. The education office began the program in 2007 to reinforce the idea among children that sweets are a "sometimes food" and shouldn't be consumed in large quantities.
