Parolee from Igo arrested, suspected in Sept. beating

Calvin William Hodge

Calvin William Hodge

After a month-long investigation, Redding police on Thursday arrested a 23-year-old Igo parolee on suspicion of beating a man so severely that he nearly tore off the victim's ear and left a blood clot in his head the size of a softball.

Calvin William Hodge was arrested Thursday at his Igo home and booked into the Shasta County jail without bail on suspicion of violating his parole, battery and mayhem, police said.

Jason Manny Mota, 23, of Redding was walking near Boulder and Valley Ridge drives about 11:30 p.m. Sept. 5 when he was confronted by a group of five or six men he didn't know, police said.

The men exchanged words and Mota fled. Police said the men chased him near Valley Ridge Drive and Twin View Boulevard.

Mota and one of the men began fighting. He got away briefly and tried to call for help on his cell phone, but one of the men took it away from him, police said.

He was then attacked from behind by another of the men, who hit him in the head so hard he fell unconscious, police said.

A short time later, he woke up and staggered to a nearby field where he lost consciousness for the next several hours, police said.

The next day, he eventually made it to Mercy Medical Center in Redding, where he was treated for a head injury and a torn ear, police said.

Mota's uncle, Rick Sedillos, 49, of Redding, said the beating nearly killed his nephew.

"He had a blood clot in his brain the size of a softball," Sedillos said. "They had to do emergency surgery. He now has three plates in his head."

In the weeks that followed, Redding investigators interviewed enough witnesses to determine that Hodge, a parolee from Igo, was the one most responsible for Mota's injuries, police said.

Sedillo said the injuries left Mota, who was studying to be a nurse practitioner, struggling with his school work.

"He may not be able to fulfill his dream," Sedillo said.

Hodge was sentenced in 2004 to three years in prison for his role in the 2003 murder of 40-year-old Sandra Lynn Metz of Round Mountain.

Hodge pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and receiving stolen property in connection with the case.

Although Hodge had a peripheral role in the episode, prosecutors claimed he aided in the disposal of stolen property and selling two guns after the woman's murder.

The investigation into the beating continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Redding police at 225-4214.

Posted by CamoQueen22 on October 4, 2008 at 8:34 a.m.

Unfortunately I know this creep and he should have been sent away a long time ago, for good. Hopefully he will be now.

Book him for good and jail the son of a gun.

I wonder if Mr. Hodge was "representin'" when this occured

Posted by crosemeyer3 on October 4, 2008 at 10:47 a.m.

More likely, he was "keeping it real."

When keeping it real goes wrong...

cool! him and OJ both off the streets!

Posted by informed on October 4, 2008 at 11:46 a.m.

As an accessory to MURDER, our local DA chose to allow this parolee to plead to a lesser charge because it was easier then going to trial! The result once again is that one of these predators was out in society. These kind of creeps go around preying on people like those of us who have morals and ethics, and attack often times in packs like this. Very much like wild animals do. What do we do with out of control animals that go around attacking for no reason? I hope the victim decides that he deserves to be appropriately compensated in civil court, by Shasta County, for their negligent retention of a DA that does not feel obligated to serve the citizens of our county. As an elected position, they like to show off statistics that make us believe that they have a high prosecution rate. This is a common trick that is deceptive to the public. As in this case, offering a lesser charge to this parolee in exchange for a guilty plea, shows a higher prosecution rate. I say do us all a favor, and take these kind of animals to trial on the charges that the full extent of the law allows! That is what the California Penal Code is for. The victim in this case deserves to be compensated for being put into a position of having to suffer unfairly. Our Shasta County DA Office could have prevented this from happening to the victim if they had only filed the appropriate criminal charges and followed through with prosecuting on those charges. The justice system would have done the rest! The penal code has heavy punishment in it for accessory to murder. There is no reason this parolee should be walking around our community!

"There is no reason this parolee should be walking around our community!"

There is a reason this parolee and others just like him run rampant through our community....THE COUNTY IS BEING PAID (EST) $5000 A YEAR FOR EACH PAROLEE RELEASED TO THIS COUNTY FOR REHABILITATION SERVICES THAT OBVIOUSLY DO NOT WORK...THE COUNTY'S POCKETS HAVE BEEN LINED AND THE VIOLENT CRIMINALS GET A PLEA DEAL TO SAVE MONEY & TIME THAT PROSECUTING THE CASE WOULD COST.

Posted by lovingtheson on October 4, 2008 at 12:40 p.m.

An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth....give him a dose of his own medicine and save the taxpayers a ton of money!

Posted by informed on October 4, 2008 at 1:05 p.m.

Rottenweiler-
Another good point, and another reason that the victim should be compensated. Are we seeing a pattern here? It is time to start holding our hired prosecutors accountable along with the criminals. We don't need new laws, we just need to use the ones that are already on the books. Somewhere along the way, prosecuters have made their own rules and are ignoring the wishes of the voters who placed these laws on the books.

Posted by mikefisher on October 4, 2008 at 1:16 p.m.

We keep cutting taxes, so there's cops/prosecutors/jail cells!

Rottenweiler...I like your posts...you are living proof not all is "Rotten" lol

Posted by Rottenweiler on October 4, 2008 at 2:34 p.m.

The prosecutors are not so much the problem, it is the elected officials that are balancing their budget by requesting parolees to be released to live in our community and are taking money from other counties to allow those parolees to live/re-offend in community.

We, the people need to set our own agenda to have these elected officials removed from office and vote people into office that will change this policy of intentionally soliciting other counties to release their parolees in our county to line their coffers . Our elected officials should be more concerned for the welfare of the citizens in our community than they are for their bottom line.

Every citizen in this county is exposed to the potential of violent crime because of this policy created by our elected officials.

The victims and their families would appreciate, and feel safer if they did not have to cross paths with the paroled offender(s) that brutalized them or someone else and their family members.

Posted by gonealot on October 4, 2008 at 3:02 p.m.

Somethings missing here. Where are all the whining family and friends telling us what a wonderful, hard working, church going member of the community he is and that he's being framed by the cops and how "The truth will come out". Oh yeah, and please ignore all those other arrests.
I still say, I hope by the time this bum gets out of prison he'll be able to rent out his rectum as a parking garage for motorcycles.

You don't have a clue about what you are talking about, Calvin was not an accessory to murder he was charged with accessory to after the fact AND THIS MEANS he found out that the people he hung out with were not the friends he thought he knew he was really charged with guilt by assoiation. If you have a child I would be sure you know all that is going on with him or her and their friends cause it could happen to you!!!!!!

Get a grip and read the facts boy!!! This person did not do anything but help a friend who was being attacked. Calvin only punched him once,
ask the witnesses, oh yeh the victom clames he was alone on the street and jumped by 5-6 men.how then are there 13 people who saw everwthing at the house party they were all at???? Do you think before you post a comment on something you have not even researched???

"Jason Manny Mota, 23, of Redding was walking near Boulder and Valley Ridge drives about 11:30 p.m. Sept. 5 when he was confronted by a group of five or six men he didn't know, police said."

Notice it says "police said", not "allegedly". So how are we supposed to know that this occurred at a house party when it's not in the story?
"Read the facts" where?

First of all Calvin was not an accessory to murder look up the fact pal before you post your stupid uneducational notes. Calvin did his time for being friends with those he thought was friends but the facts are he did not know what they did. He was not there he was at work with his father, he was left out of the plan because they knew he wouldn't be a part of that. He did not get off on a lesser plea or any thing. He did 3 years for being a stupid child. Everyone has a child that listines to his friends so will yours one day be in that sitiuation? God saw that this boy is one of his and is not a creep as you say and this parolee should be walking our streets, Calvin is a GOOD MAN he helped out a friend who was being attacked read the investagerors report others attacked Jason after Calvin was long gone.

Nice call. The post after yours, from "kidd" about how he is innocent. Good one.

To start off you don't know the facts. Calvin is a good person he would not hurt anyone. The people need to know more about what actually happens in their town. This is one parolee that no family would be afraid to be around HE IS A GOD FEARING MAN that is being tested. EVER BEEN THERE BROTHER IN CHRIST?

Posted by CamoQueen22 on October 4, 2008 at 4:07 p.m.

Mayhem is a bad charge too.

A friend of mine got in a scuffle at a bar with an older gentlman. He was drunk and hit me and shattered a beer mug across my arm and my face. So my friend hit him and his glass shattered.

The guy got off with no charges, but my friend went to prison for Mayhem. Doesn't really make much sense to me.

Posted by gonealot on October 4, 2008 at 5:16 p.m.

Thank you Kidd, I'm glad one of you whiners popped up. I've read the story 3 times, looked it up on the booking sheet and guess what. I can't find any mention of a party or a bunch of witnesses. If there were any wittinesses, why did they leave the guy laying in the Field overnight? I also noted your friend isn't all that "clean".
Keep whining son, the truth will come out.

"Get a grip and read the facts boy!!!"

"...look up the fact pal before ..."

"...you don't know the facts"

If you know the "facts" so well, how do you know them? Were you one of the "witnesses" that left this man bleeing for hours?

And I dont seem any facts from any of your posts. Just biased opinions and emotions because someone you know turned out to be a dirtbag.

I know Calvin. I knew him before his first crime. With the murder. Yeah, his hands were filthy. And they still are!

Posted by not2bright on October 4, 2008 at 5:39 p.m.

the truth will come out. calvin wasn't even there, it was his evil twin, hobbs. calvin was at a ballet recital. the cops pick on calvin because he's a good person. he got messed up by his friends last time. he was just trying to unload some firearms for his friend. the owner didn't need them since she was dead. you people need to read the story before you comment!

Posted by kidd on October 4, 2008 at 6:46 p.m.

in response to gonealot

YES I DO KNOW WHAT THE FACTS ARE,SEE YOU LOOKED UP THE BOOKING SHEET? THEN YOU KNOW THEY ARE LOOKING FOR OTHERS LIKE ANDY FOR ONE AND HAVE MORE THAN THEY ARE SAYING. IF JASON WAS ATTACKED LIKE HE SAYS JUMPED BY 5-6 GUYS HE DOESN'T KNOW. THEN WHY WOULD THERE BE WHITNESS WHO SAY YES CALVIN DID HIT HIM "ONCE" THAT DOES NOT LEAD TO ALL THE REST OF HIS INJURYS AND WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE THAT LET JASON LAY THERE? WELL THOSE ARE HIS SO CALLED FRIENDS THAT HE WAS AT TH HOUSE PARTY WITH.

Posted by The_Leprechaun96 on October 4, 2008 at 7:48 p.m.

Given the fact that this article was written by the same mental midget who wrote other articles that he had NO clue about, I tend to not believe much about what he has to say about this one..... Besides, why is this still "news" 2 DAYS after it happened? Just because you put in a few extra sentences doesn't necessitate that you put a whole new article out there. The fact that the victim "had a blood clot the size of a baseball" isn't really all that relevant. All it does is turn more people against the man who was arrested.

Back at you boy? My name is CamoQueen... thats not implying "female" as my gender at all... Wow.

And no, I am not just some bystander. I know Calvin. Moron. I went to school with him. He was sick and creepy then, just as much as he is now. I hope he goes away for a long time for the crime he committed. And I know Danielle too. I am glad she got put away. He should have been there with her. HE IS A CREEP-O!

"NO NOT A WITNESS BUT THERE AFTER THE FACT"

Should you be charge as an accessory after the fact? Did you report the crime to the police or try to get the man medical attention? Highly doubtful that you tried to do the right thing considering you want to claim this man is god fearing, he obviously did not fear God when he tried to dispose of the guns from Sandra Metz's murder.he was just helping his friends to cover their crime..Oh and I did know Sandra, she lived less than a mile from me and I encountered her 2 days before her murder....It was devastating for her son that no doubt still suffers without his mother.

Ok CamoQueen22 I know Calvin way better than you and think I know who you are especially since you knew Danielle. Calvin is not and was not sick and creepy as you say He was saying and doing things to keep CREEPS like you away and not to really know him cause people like you would take advantage of a person like him. Danielle was involved in a crime she got what what was comming. Calvin on the other hand was not there, did not know what or when they commited the crime, get over it and since it seems you are throwing the stone I guess you have never sinned correct CamoQueen22???

The police said what they were told by Jason thats why it says that. I have spoke to the investigater on this case it all happened at a house party this will eventually come out. Poeple make judgements on others by what the paper says, look at the Jonbanee case 7 years later they know her parents were not responcible. think about it.

Posted by CamoQueen22 on October 5, 2008 at 9:17 a.m.

in response to kidd

Oh, no. I have sinned. A lot. But I have NEVER beat someone down, let alone left them to die basically. I have NEVER been in a plot to rob a friends house and shoot and kill her mother.

And you dont know me. You have no clue who I am and you have no room to judge me. I haven't made a judgment to you, just to Calvin. Because I know him.

You are correct, Danielle got what was coming to her. Calvin should have as well and hopefully he will get what is coming to him with ANOTHER crime.

If Calvin is such a good guy, why didn't he walk away? Not that easy? Well for him, it should be the easiest decision for him to make so he doesn't go back to prison.

But guess what. He screwed up. Again. And he is going back.

Posted by kidd on October 5, 2008 at 9:32 a.m.

I was told what happened after it happened, I was not there as I live many miles away. I agree with you about Sandras son that is so sad, but it was all Sandras daughters idea to off her mother she was not thinking about her brother or any one but herself she was full of hate as many teens are, even if she didn't mean it she got her boyfriend to do it. As far as the guns are concearned check the official records Calvin was charged with helping sell the guns, it was proved he did not have any part in that and that charge was dropped. Why does everyone whant to bring up untrue facts.

Posted by kidd on October 5, 2008 at 9:48 a.m.

in response to CamoQueen22

Calvin did not beat someone down he him him once to get him off his friend Andy and they left immediatly, he also was not in a plot to rob or kill his friends mother if you read the police records all 4 who were charged with that said Calvin was not involved he did not know and was not told by them until after they were arrested and Calvin wanted to know what happened, yes he was wrong and accepted a stolen weppon to keep his mouth shut but he was also told he would die if he said a word, he told all this to his family and then it all wnet down fast, Calvin was a 18 year old that was in a situation he didn't know how to handle, he did 3 years in prison for accepting a stolen weppon he does deserve to move on and God is a big part of his life now, helping a friend from being beat up is not bad but I agree he should have just pushed the guy took his friend and left not hit Jason, and the investigater has said others beat up Jason after Calvin and Andy left. The truth will come out.

No threats to you or any one I am just saying this could happen to anyone or their family and you try to protect your loved ones other people pretend to be their friend, have you ever warned your sister. brother, cousin, child, even a parent ect... that the people they are around are trouble and they don't listen, what can you do, they have to learn and maybe real bad things happen, still when they get thru it they desere the chance to start again.

Maybe you need to read the facts. It says 5-6 men ganged up on one man and if 13 people were standing around watching they should be charged too. Btw, its not called helping, its called GANGING up on ONE man!

Oh he only punched him once. The moment you lay your hand onto someone its assault and 5 or more people assisting you is even worse. What a brutal aggravated assault and it almost cost Mota his life.

Posted by hpcrdredding on October 5, 2008 at 4 p.m.

He was charged with it. End of story. Maybe you should refrain from posting your stupidity.

Maybe this idiot should learn to call the police rather then take matters into his own hands. He deserves to go to prison for life, and he will.
