The big spenders are clear

When Shasta Voices sent a newsletter to the voters, it didn't cite any names, only city issues. I really wished it had identified the big spending culprits, but it didn't take long for Ken Murray and Dick Dickerson to step forward and identify themselves. The glass slipper fit and it wasn't comfortable for them. There is still one more. Keep your eyes peeled for Mary Stegall.

Palms add touch of class

I just wanted to give my input on the palms on Hilltop Drive. Every time I go up to Redding to shop and I drive on Hilltop, a smile comes to my face and I think how lucky we are to have such beautiful palms to look at. It doesn't matter where you live in California, palms are part of this beautiful state. They really add class to the city of Redding.

Herger tries to steal thunder

I just learned that ol' Johnny on the Spot Wally Herger is going to tour the Weaverville Community Forest on Monday. It is all most of us in Weaverville can do to keep breathing.

Where was Wally when we tried to get this thing started six years ago? Now that it is a functioning and productive community forest, a prototype for similar community-based forests for other rural areas of California, a forest receiving accolades from around the nation and in the eye of Washington, well, ol' Wally feels like it is time to finally settle on the throne of accomplishment and pat his own back.

Sorry Wally, Trinity County Supervisor Jeff Morris has already broken the throne in. Jeff Morris owns it. Jeff Morris owns the vision that brought this thing to life. Jeff Morris owns the right to the lit billboard of fame that you seek to usurp. How dare you come to Weaverville and set foot in our community forest, you political hack. Are your polling numbers that low? Or are you trying to use a play out of the razzle-dazzle McCain playbook and toss a Hail Mary in the hopes that something sticks and we all become distracted? We will be there — a lot of us — with our Jeff Morris for Congress T-shirts.

Save Roe vs. Wade

I am concerned about McCain-Palin if they get in office. One reason is overturning Roe vs. Wade.

I have a granddaughter who has high-functioning autism. If there were sexual abuse, heaven forbid, and she became pregnant, the medication she has to take three or four times a day is strong enough to harm a fetus. Plus she would not really understand what would be going on with her body.

I do not believe in getting an abortion just because you don't want a child. If in the case of rape, incest or the mother's life is in danger, a person should have the choice to do what is best for them.

I do not feel I have the right to say they have no choices. McCain-Palin are for overturning Roe vs. Wade. I hope this never happens.

Gosh Billie Jo, what is your concern? Is your Granddaughter a victim of sexual abuse or incest? If so you need to call the police. Don't blame it on Roe vs Wade or McCain/Palin.

You may be interested to hear that McCain and Palin have never discussed any efforts to overturn Roe vs Wade. Why would you put false bull cr-p out there trying to scare people. You and Billie Bob have nothing to worry about.

Posted by d2127791 on October 3, 2008 at 6:25 a.m.

John Veevaert......I know how you feel. I felt the same when Obama 2x went to Germany for a free concert.

Posted by onandonanon on October 3, 2008 at 6:44 a.m.

Mr. Veevaert - Right on! How DARE they do a lot of the crap they get away with? - Because they know they can get away with it. Palin gets the media spotlight but has nothing for it to focus on. The Republicans knew her qualifications were shaky, but they went ahead on with her as VP nominee, because they knew America is now dumbed-down enough to possibly elect another don't-know, don't-want-to-know ignoramus to ACT as our leader. Herger wants to ACT like he had something to do with the kind of project he routinely ignores or quashes for the benefit of his rich friends.

When Obama spoke in Germany, I was proud to hear an American speak in complete sentences with cogent, rational ideas. For a change.

Posted by cptcrazy on October 3, 2008 at 7:18 a.m.

What an odd concern about Roe v. Wade she has. I hope most women don't sit around thinking about their autistic granddaughters getting raped. And if that's not enough to go one step further and worry that she won't be able to get an abortion after she's raped. Billie, you need to focus on the positive things in life. You need some tips from your Neo Samuri.

Roe v. Wade should not be a concern of yours. Respectfully, I do hope that your granddaughter is never raped.

Bush had to "dumb down" his speeches so the democrats could understand them...Obama has to speak well trying to convince the republicans to vote for him.

Posted by onandonanon on October 3, 2008 at 7:44 a.m.

That's it Acronym - attack the Democrats when you don't have anything to offer in real response to my comments. Bush didn't have to dumb anything down; he came pre-dumbed. Obama's respect for education and rational discourse is hard for you zombies and dittoheads to perceive. Because you've never been exposed to anything but hateful attacks and Entertainment-Tonight political shorthand. You NEED a better example, and so do the children of America. Just think, respect for OTHER nations and peoples! Wow, whatta concept. Then, they could respect us as well. Instead, well, you know.

Roe vs Wade
First let me say I'm voting for Obama. However, on the Roe vs Wade issue, I wish democrats would lean more towards Palin's idea. The way I used to feel about abortion was "not for me". That was until I worked for the Medi-Cal program. That's when I was given the opportunity to see the mass amount of people who do use abortion for birth control. Many , many of them were getting Medi-Cal to go down south for late term abortions, the ones where they rip the fetus apart so it isn't born alive. I also remember the 14 yr old who was there for her 3rd abortion (birth control). The one that really swayed me was the woman who was needing MC for a late term abortion. She had broken up with her boyfriend and now, in her own words, wanted, "to kill his f**king baby." You're right, abortion should not be birth control. It should be strictly controlled to not include any of the instances I've mentioned.

Posted by Patrecia_Barrett on October 3, 2008 at 8:28 a.m.

I was listening to Gary Cadd and Patrick Jones on KQMS (Cadd is being endorsed by Jones). Cadd would be a good choice to replace free-spending, lack-of-planning candidates Murray and Dickerson. It sounds like Cadd would promote expenditures that benefit the general population of Redding rather than just the interests of the influential elite. It would be nice to have a fiscally responsible majority on the council for a change.

Bush "dumb down" his speeches? That is the funniest post I have ever seen on these blogs. If Bush had dumb down his speeches all you would have heard was gurgle goo-goo ga ga. His oratorical skills have never been much more accomplished cockatiel bird.

Remember, 100% of those who are for abortion have already been born.

From a former fetus.

Quoted , but tweaked to fit the circumstances:

Obama gets the media spotlight but has nothing for it to focus on. The Democrats knew his qualifications were shaky, but they went ahead with him as their President nominee, because they know America is now dumbed-down enough to possibly elect another don't-know, don't-want-to-know ignoramus to ACT as our leader.

Seems to me like Obama fits this statement better than Palin. And he is the President Nominee. Now that is just plain scary.

"You and Billie Bob have nothing to worry about."

It does not take a brain scientist to know that is exactly what this duo will do. Your insulting tone does nothing to help the debate on this matter. Yes, she does have something to worry about and so do I. McCain consistently have voted down any measure that has anything to do with pro-choice and has mentioned many, many times he is anti-choice and so has Palin. For you to say otherwise means that either you are living somewhere without the news media including this newspaper or you are incredible dense.

Roe v Wade should be overturned to protect the right to life of the unborn baby.
It was a horrible decision.
The right to life SUPERCEDES the right to privacy, or the right to choice.
~~~
The Supreme Court is not supposed to create laws - the Court is supposed interpret the Constitution, but not legislate from the bench. Article VI, Section 2 of the United States Constitution lists three things as "the supreme law of the land": (1) This constitution; (2) The laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance of it; and (3) All treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States.
Court decisions are not mentioned.
~~~
Court opinion was, and is now seen as only "evidence of law." Thus, a Supreme Court decision can be overturned by a subsequent Supreme Court decision if is later deemed that the interpretation was incorrect. For instance, Abraham Lincoln refused to accept the Supreme Court's decision in Dred Scott as the law of the land, vocally denounced it, and eventually it was overturned by amendments to the Constitution.
~~~
In the 1857 Dred Scott v. Sanford decision, which declared that slavery could not be prohibited by Congress in any territory of the U.S. and that African Americans were not full persons and not afforded the same rights as "full persons." Sound familiar? President Lincoln argued that the slaves were persons, not possessions, and that their unalienable right to liberty was protected by the Declaration of Independence. To add to the irony, after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, came the Thirteenth (1865) and Fourteenth (1868) Amendments, all which overthrew slavery and the erroneous Dred Scott Supreme Court decision. The Fourteenth Amendment...how ironic. One of the Amendments which helped overturn Dred Scott is now used to further the "non-person" argument contained in Roe v Wade - the same argument the Amendment was created to prevent! How can the Supreme Court use the Fourteenth Amendment to help justify denying the unborn unalienable rights when this Amendment was supposed to protect people from such selective rights attribution?
~~~
Ridden with contradictions and highly debatable constitutional decisions, I hope that one day Roe v Wade is chalked up, just like Dred Scott v Sanford, as one of the grievous errors of the Supreme Court, and overturned. Until then, it seems as if the discrimination will continue against those who are unable speak for themselves - the type of discrimination the Constitution should fight against, not justify.

You wrote: "The right to life SUPERCEDES the right to privacy, or the right to choice."

And the right to control your own body. Roe vs. Wade corrected the discrimination that a woman's body does not belong to her. People like you, for whatever reason, have been trying to return the woman to the status of chattel as she was years ago.

Try and imagine how scary it must be for women who are aware of this fact. That is she is raped, seduced or just makes a mistake the entire structure of the government will decend on her to make sure she has no control over her own body. For the first time in history when Roe vs. Wade was decided she had a slim hope that she was able to give up back alley abortions and unwanted children and having a say so in the way her body is used will be lost again back to the thousands of years of not having a say at all.

I doubt if you can understand what I am writing and what people had to go through to try and control the size of their families. Men control the government. It is a patriarchy out there and the patriarchy that wants the woman returned to their total control. Luckily, not all men feel this way. Senator Obama does not.

Nor do I zebrareader (great handle).

CATO, you speak of the evils of socialism, atheism, gay rights, do I need to continue? I submit to you that your fellow Americans are due all the rights that you have enjoyed during your life. If someone makes a poor choice cato, guess what it is their choice and does not affect your life. You remind me of folks in my small home town that marginalize others with their over active need to control their world.

Relax Cato; let folks live their own lives and not one prescribed them by you or others like you. You know if you get what you want many other situations will arise; such as:

1. who will regulate/police such things?
2. what kind of lives will these unwanted folks have?
3. what kind of gestation will those unwanted fetus’ have?
4. who will pay for them?
5. finally, Cato will you be the one to tell someone that can or can not do such things with their lives?

Cato, I think its time to jump off that high horse you ride named fascism as I do not believe you understand the complexity of which you speak.

Let folks live their own lives? Each of us have so much damn regulation on our lives. From wearing helmets/seatbelts to having food cooked in transfat. Give me a break. Government has it's hand in almost everything in our own daily life, some of the laws you would probably approve of. Sounds like you're just a "selective" facist that can't see the larger picture beyond your own ideology.

Roe v Wade was HEARD on the basis of privacy, so it was decided on the basis of privacy.
It is that simple.
There may be a right to life, but then you get into PROVING when that "life" begins. You cannot do that. Your case is empty.

There was no legislation from the bench. What you are doing is asking judges to be activist and do just that.

Betty Lenherr - Class, palm trees are a lot of things but class? please.....

Having class?

The dictionary states Classy is, "Possessing elegance, the attribute of being tastefully designed, decorated and maintaining refined grace and dignified propriety."

I consider Beverly Hills, California a place "...tastefully designed decorated and maintaining refined grace and dignified..." The homes are gorgeous and the streets are well decorated with great landscaping INCLUDING LOTS OF PALMS.

I do not think Redding is trying to aspire to be a Beverly Hills, but it sure is nice that SOME improvements are being made. If you do not like it here, move away.

Posted by sistakimba on October 3, 2008 at 3:14 p.m.

It is important to keep in mind that the No. 1 reason women have abortions is because they don't have the emotional or financial support of the father. The fact that so many men choose not to honor and support their offspring is one of the biggest problems that exists in our country and costs our society and its taxpayers big time. How many elaborate laws have had to be enacted just to hold men accountable? To assist children without a father in the house? How many of these same writers complain in other blogspots about having to pay taxes for welfare recipients? Until there is justice for women and children in this world, the woman's right to choose must stand.

First thing first m249, sound like you've been in the service, army? If you have thanks for your service.

My my, you sure can assume much from a couple of words can't you. I care less what you do, think, say, etc. That is until you push your worldview on others; which is what Cato enjoys doing. With Cato I was pointing out that if it is passed the issues sprawling from such a law could precipitate many, many more issues.

Any who, care to explain something for me?

You say:
“Government has it's hand in almost everything in our own daily life ....."

I agree and I have a certain reaction when others, such as Cato, want it to reach all the way into the Holys o’ the Holys. Get it?

So from your statement above you move to this:

“Sounds like you're just a "selective" facist that can't see the larger picture beyond your own ideology.”
Hmmmm, care to key me in on your flow of logic from the government influence on our every day lives to calling me a fascist? Sort of has that school ground: “I know you are but what am I” thing. Maybe a definition of selective fascism would be good for starters.

BTW-"some of the laws you would probably approve of" sure would! Such as:
Criminal law
Contract law
To name a couple. The law that Cato was refering to is Judiciary which is the third area of our government and in this case the Court found violation of constitutional rights to privacy under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Wally Herger has been AWOL in Trinity County his whole term and now he's coming up here for an empty photo opp. I can't think of a single thing he has ever done to help the North State, north of Yuba. It's too little too late and we won't have the wool pulled over our eyes, nor should anyone. Where was Wally when our forests were on fire and we were suffocating in smoke? Even Arnold was around more than he was. All Herger did was ride over in a helicopter with his good ol' boy George Bush, then it was back to DC. This guy has got to go and it's up to us to do the right thing for the North State and vote for JEFF MORRIS. He's been on the job and working hard to improve our county. Give him a chance do the same for the North State.

Many women these days are raising children on their own without the help of welfare. The "choice" should be made before becoming pregnant. If pregnancy was beyond her control then an abortion should be done asap, like the morning after pill in the case of rape. Absolutely no late term abortions should be done unless the health, both mental and physical, of the mother is in danger. There is adoption. Families wait years to adopt a newborn. If people new the reality of abortion I'm sure things would change.

TOO many women are raising their children on their own and it's a major league problem for our country. I do acknowledge your point that many of them are able to do it successfully, because women simply put, are amazing. But it ain't easy and kids need both their parents. It's time for all people who want abortion to be the last choice, to call for more accountability on the part of the fathers of all children of this nation.
