New Tech teacher earns fellowship
ANDERSON -- Anderson New Technology High School history teacher Catherine Alderman has been awarded a $24,000 national fellowship that will allow her to pursue a master's degree.
Alderman is one of 58 recipients of the James Madison Fellowship this year. The fellowship is sponsored by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1986 as an independent establishment of the Executive Branch. Recipients are required to teach middle school American history or social studies for each year they have the fellowship.
Session to discuss Internet child abuse
ANDERSON -- A training on "Internet Child Abuse: Protecting Youth Against Online Perpetrators" will be held July 1.
The session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Law enforcement officers, social workers, counselors, school personnel, other professionals working with young people, and parents are encouraged to attend. Continuing education credit is available for licensed clinical social workers and marriage and family therapists.
For more information or to register, call Dawn Fisher at 241-5816. The training is presented by the Northeast Regional Coalition of Child Abuse Prevention Councils and the Crime Victims Assistance Center.
Sports camp offered in south Shasta County
ANDERSON -- The City of Anderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting an all-day summer camp and offering a number of afternoon and evening sports camps this summer for children and teenagers.
Sports camps available are football, basketball, softball, skateboarding, soccer, disc golf, dance and color guard. The camps begin in mid-July and move into August, each lasting four days. Fees range from $20 to $35.

College to offer adult summer dance classes
Shasta College's Economic and Workforce Development is offering beginning swing and salsa/cha-cha classes for adults in July.
The beginning Swing -- Single/Triple-time Rhythms class will be held Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. from July 7 to Sept. 2 and includes instruction on jitterbug and jive dance styles.
The salsa/cha-cha class will be held Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning July 17 and running through Sept. 4. Both classes will be held in the college's Cafeteria Campus Center, Building 2000 and taught by Tim Gregory.
Enrollment is $45 for singles, $65 for couples. A dance partner is not required. For more information, call 225-4835.
