Shasta College expands its regional fall offerings

Shasta College is offering a host of classes and continuing education courses across Shasta, Tehama and Trinity counties.

Starting Monday, the college will start its Shasta Vocal Institute, daily vocal music classes held through Aug. 14. The course ends with a concert in the college cafeteria at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14.

The Shasta College Community Concert Band has openings and will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 in Room 633 at the college's main Redding campus for those interested in participating.

Shasta College is also expanding its emergency medical technician training courses in Redding, Red Bluff, Weaverville and Burney. Classes are held nightly on weekdays and on select Saturdays. Also offered at its satellite locations will be American citizenship and English as a second language literacy classes. Courses are slated to begin this fall in Red Bluff, Anderson, Gerber and Fall River Mills.

Also planned this fall is a children's literature class at the college's Red Bluff campus. The class will meet from 4 to 5:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Aug. 19.

Local YMCA readies its fall kid classes

Shasta Family YMCA will be offering a variety of back-to-school programs for children and teenagers this fall.

Its Prime Time Y Afterschool Program will run from school dismissal time to 6 p.m. weekdays starting Aug. 16 at Turtle Bay, Manzanita, Columbia, Boulder Creek and East Cottonwood elementary schools.

Stingrays Swim Club will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Fridays beginning Sept. 12.

The free program Youth Boot Camp will meet twice a week this fall. The YMCA has not yet released specific dates for the activity.

Its Raising a Reader and Read to Me book clubs for children ages 2 to 5 will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays beginning Sept. 9. Parents must pre-register by Sept 5.

Dunsmuir High searches for a culinary master

DUNSMUIR -- The high school here is looking for a cafeteria director/teacher as it begins classes in the fall.

The teacher will lead Dunsmuir High's culinary arts program and run its cafeteria. Applicants must have or be eligible for a teaching credential with two years foodservice experience.
