Senior citizens and others on fixed incomes say "No" to Redding Electric Utility's proposed 8 percent increase. This proposal is absurd at this point in time in our country's financial crisis. Redding is attacking the most vulnerable citizens in its community to balance its budget. This is insanity.

I am compelled to respond to Maurice Huff's letter (Thursday). I am an avid hiker and backpacker in several of our nearby federally protected wilderness areas. Last month I hiked into the Salmon/Russian Peaks Wilderness area, just west of central Siskiyou County's Scott Valley.

I find it amusing that Ken DeCamp ("Speak Your Piece," last Sunday), a former Forest Service employee, failed to contact the Forest Service law enforcement personnel to stop the illegal riding of OHV's in nondesignated areas. Wait, there is no number for persons to notify for enforcement.

The electoral contest over California's Proposition 8 was a low, dishonest affair - the deception made worse by the fact that so much of it was financed by religious organizations, such as the Mormon church and the Catholic Knights of Columbus. Still, if cooler heads on both sides of the question don't exert themselves, things may soon get even nastier.

The panic in Sacramento this fall has been every bit as severe as that on Wall Street. But in a way it's all unnecessary, because the solution to much of the state's financial problem has been staring lawmakers in the face for years.

In the political campaigns just ended we heard a great deal about proposed changes in our taxes. Some feel they heard too much. It's also possible to hear too much about death but, as they say, both are certain. This makes both of enduring interest.

WHERE'S THE JUSTICE? When VP candidate Sarah Palin was hanged in effigy, the authorities said no crime was committed. Sunday's Record Searchlight reports the same thing is happening to President-elect Obama, and it's considered a hate crime. I still question the imbalance in justice.

KIDS WIN A VOTE: In these financially scary times, with plunging markets, home foreclosures and high unemployment, four of five school bonds on the ballot passed. Good job, Shasta County voters. Your generosity put our children first. They are our future and they need a good education to get us out of this mess.

simply un-American: Other than showing an utter lack of knowledge, the only thing the vicious letter from Vollie Bisnett (Saturday) proves is his complete lack of patriotism. I cannot remember a more un-American letter in the last 35 years.

It's been a dismal eight years for the U.S. Forest Service. When the Bush administration took office, it immediately suspended a popular measure to protect 58 million acres of backcountry public forests from new roads. Instead, the agency became consumed by firefighting.

I find it amusing that the Shasta County Board of Supervisors has attacked the U.S. Forest Service over pending decisions concerning OHV use on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The reason for my amusement stems from an incident I had with one of the board members some time back in Clear Creek Campground, where I found him and three others riding ATVs off-road in and around the campground. I introduced myself to them as a Forest Service employee and explained that riding off-road was not only illegal but that it caused damage to the land they were riding over.

This afternoon, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors will have a hearing concerning the Hatchet Ridge Wind project. The board's decision will have a significant impact on birds living in and migrating through the West. The Board of Supervisors has not been given the knowledge to make a proper decision on the project. Also, the Shasta County Planning Commission could not possibly make a wise decision with the poor biological assessment that was presented to the county. I cannot emphasize how important this meeting will be. I hope to bring some clarity to the matter.

In their recent "Speak Your Piece" against Proposition 5, Shasta County District Attorney Jerry Benito and Sheriff Tom Bosenko suggested that the proposition would allow people who sell drugs to avoid consequences.

Proposition 5 is the latest attempt to decriminalize illegal drug usage. The extremely lengthy and convoluted proposition disguised as a "rehabilitation" measure, in reality, increases "chances" for drug users and decreases accountability. Everyone hopes that drug users will be rehabilitated. But this proposition ignores what has worked in Shasta County and the rest of the country - rehabilitation with accountability.
